Keirsey presents a self-assessed personality questionnaire
(or
personality survey) known as the
Keirsey Temperament Sorter, which links human behavioral
patterns to
four personality types (or temperaments) and sixteen
character types. The
Keirsey test goes well beyond the scope of most
personality tests, focusing on the sixteen possible
combinations of these four
personality types. A shorter sorter called the
Four Types Sorter, just focuses on Dr. Keirsey's four
temperaments, the Artisan, Guardian, Rational, and the Idealist.
Available on this website is the
Temperament Sorter, sometimes referred to as "Keirsey
personality test" or "Keirsey
temperament test." Also available are his two most popular
publications, "Please
Understand Me" (1978,
co-authored by Marilyn Bates) and the revised and expanded second
volume, "Please
Understand Me
II" (1998). In addition to these, you'll also find "The
Sixteen Types," a booklet containing the profiles of each
of the sixteen role variants described in "Please
Understand Me
II."

David Keirsey are intended to first help you understand the
origins and motivations for your own
personality through his
temperament test, and then to understand and effectively
relate to people with various
temperament and
personality styles different from your own. It is the
author's sincere hope that since we all possess
different types of personality traits, this understanding
will lead to more harmonious relationships.
